The scans are painless, have no known side effects on mothers or babies, and can be carried out at any stage of pregnancy. Talk to your midwife, GP or obstetrician about any concerns you have. Dating scans are a type of ultrasound scan performed during pregnancy. In early pregnancy your womb can be quite small and lies quite low in the pelvis.
Trans abdominal ultrasound scan. Some warm gel is applied to your lower abdomen and a probe is used to transmit ultrasound images to the screen for interpretation. A trans-vaginal internal scan may also be required to fully assess your pregnancy. You will be asked to empty your bladder and a probe will be inserted into the vagina as far as a tampon. This additional technique can give extra information which may be critical in assessing the well-being of your pregnancy.
The scan will confirm your due date and assess the viability of the pregnancy. The scan is most accurate around weeks. We can also scan you if you are having problems with your pregnancy e. We can then check to see if your baby is alive or whether you might be having a miscarriage or whether you might have an ectopic pregnancy. You must bring your referral with you. We cannot scan you without the referral from you doctor or midwife. The sonographer will discuss the results with you.
The viability of the pregnancy, number of fetuses, and the expected delivery date can be checked by doing an early pregnancy scan. The best possible information and resolution is obtained if the test is done transvaginally. Clearer images are obtained if we are able to use a much higher resolution transducer by getting close to the fetus. To obtain the best possible images of the fetus, the doctor or sonographer will introduce and position the transducer in the best possible manner.

Your Pregnancy Journey
It is important that you see a Midwife as early as possible in your pregnancy. Women have their first and longest Antenatal appointment between 6 – 12 weeks of pregnancy with their Midwife. This is called a “booking” visit and involves questions about your health, any illnesses or previous pregnancies. This helps us to see if there may be any possible problems during your pregnancy and allows us to tailor your Antenatal care for your specific needs.
At the start of your pregnancy, during your booking visit, your Midwife will make an assessment based on your previous and current medical and pregnancy history.

The main purpose of a dating scan is to check the stage of pregnancy and therefore when the baby is due. Measuring the baby can be more accurate than dating by the last menstrual period. It is also an opportunity to check the baby is alive and developing as expected, and check for twins. This scan may also be part of your screening test for Down’s syndrome nuchal translucency scan. Occasionally, if the baby is in an awkward position, an internal scan may be carried out, using a vaginal probe.
